It is aimed at students following introductory sociology courses in higher education: in particular, first-year undergraduates following courses in sociology. It will also be useful for students on vocational and related courses where sociology forms an integral part of their studies – for instance, courses in the fields of nursing, social work, social policy and criminal justice. For some students such introductory courses provide their initial and only formal study of sociology; for others it serves as a basis for further study. Also, some students come to their first-year courses having studied A-level or access courses in sociology, while others have not studied the subject before. Indeed, one of the main objectives behind the development of this book has been to produce a text that meets and responds to the diversity of background knowledge of sociology among students starting their higher education courses.en_US
